step
1
Select a word that you would like to make into an ambigram. A good word to start with is your name or the name of a friend or loved one, which you can then use to make as a gift. Try to keep your first ambigram five to eight letters long.
Step
2
Play with the word or name on a scrap piece of paper. Work on the curves of the letters and make them fit together creatively and beautifully.
Step
3
Work out the ambigram to combine the letters so the word can be read in the secondary form. For example, to make the ambigram so it can still be read when turned clockwise and upside down, combine the first letter with the last letter to get them to look the same, then do the same with the second and the second to last letter and so on.
Step
4
Try different combinations of curves in the letters until you get a combination that works. Turn the paper upside down as you design your word to see what shapes you need to try for in the ambigram.
Step
5
Choose a style that will allow you to actually create a font for your ambigram. Keep the style uniform and consistent throughout your design.
Step
6
Show your ambigram to a friend or friends and get their opinions on it. Make sure they can figure out what your ambigram says.
